Glasgow Holiday To-Do List
Glasgow
hotel possibilities
- Arthouse leads the pack.
- But, if that doesn't pan out, the idea of staying in a converted church at Malmaison Glasgow is also compelling.
- St. Jude's is also an attractive option...
- As is the waterfall-including Lang's
sites to see/things to do
- Gallery of Modern Art in its former Georgian Mansion housing.
- Centre for Contemporary Arts (CCA), 350 Sauchiehall Street.
- While researching sites for all the Glasgow museums, I found a good catch-all resource for their museums: http://www.glasgowmuseums.com/ -- the design renders poorly on my MAC, but it *does* provide good information once you get past that.
- Glasgow School of Art for its Mackintosh Building, etc.
- The Lighthouse, Mackintosh's first public commission, and billed as "Scotland's Centre for Architecture, Design and the City" -- 3 of my favorite topics.
- Glasgow Cathedral is a must visit since it has a crypt and I always visit nearly every large stone edifice in my path whilst on vacation...besides, it is on the way to the Glasgow Necropolis and a Winter Garden (Glasgow has several, apparently.). It sucks that I lacked time to get to Pre-Lachaise in Paris so I have to make time for this one.
- After the Necropolis, I should journey into the St. Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art to see the Dali Crucifixion that was moved from the Kelligrove as it goes through its refurbishment.
- I'd like to take some photos of the burnt out Caledonian Road Church
- The Burrell Collection and its Pollock House
- House for an Art Lover, recently completed from some Mackintosh sketches.
- The Mackintosh House reconstruction.
- Unfortunately, Hill House won't be open while I'm there.
places to drink/eat/shop
- Willow Tea Rooms, of course, even though they are just recreations of what was and I can already imagine the teaming hordes of tourists accompanied by runny-nosed children...
- Since it is likely to be the only city in which I can have someone else help me polish off a bottle of wine, I have to go to Stravaigin with its "eat global, think local" slow food motto.
- Though it looks like it might have a bit stuffy clientele, I think I'll try for a lunch at Ubiquitous Chip since the goat cheese fritter and the bread pudding both sound so tasty.
- Ditto for St. Jude's with its dark chocolate and whisky souffle. Yum.
- I will rely upon dave to steer me into the best places to drink or hear music, and to help me navigate the streets in search of vintage frocks and art deco trinkets...I am certain he won't steer me wrong.
- Must take many silly photos of above identified tour guide so as to appropriately fill out his fri*ndst*r photo album. Hehe.
Oh my. Now how much time do you think all that is going to take, exactly?
