noise pop

Tower Raven in the Extreme Yesterday was my first day or noise pop festivities. There were lots of other shows I would have loved to have gone to, but my work week travel to beautiful, snowy Cleveland prevented that. I'll try harder to avoid such distractions next year.

education sessions

I started off my day helping set out chairs for the education panels at Noe Valley ministry, a church used frequently for intimate music events. I was quite thankful for the free bagels and water they provided, since the only sustenance I'd brought with me was a box of thin mint girl scout cookies.

The most interesting and entertaining session was the artists panel, discussing "Does Indie Still Rock?" Moderated by Chris Appelgren of Lookout! Records, the panelilsts included John Doe (X), Sharky Laguana (Creeper Lagoon), Lynn Perko (Imperial Teen), Jody Stephens (Big Star), and Kim Warnick (The Fastbacks). After going through the moderators questions, they gamely responded to questions from the audience. Some of the more interesting discussions were around the effects MP3s have on independent record stores and artist royalties, and the idea of creating a musicians union that would pool, in a socialist fashion, artists' proceeds and redistribute them amongst the members so that if one member made it big, the others could make a living from it also. Sharky was quick to add, in response to a quick quip from an audience member, that he loved the idea but that, no, it was *not* retroactive to apply to his band's deal. John Doe's responses across the board were especially funny and insightful.

Fuck. While looking up some info. on the Noise Pop site, I see the time for the Cafe Du Nord show this afternoon has been changed back to what I initially thought it was: incredibly early and close to the present time. I haven't eaten, need to get dressed, and wanted to make a quick trip to Amoeba to buy records...

Instead, I'm going to fly around the apartment and hustle on down to MUNI. Wish me luck.
