so, I walked right up to you...

spitalfields ...and you walked all over me
and I ask you what you want
and you tell me what you need

In case you were wondering, I am exceptionally excited about the Raveonettes show tonight at GAMH. Stellastarr* just got a write-up in Devil in the Woods and there seems to be lots of buzz about them. And the article in The Stranger this week about Kittens for Christian is actually inspiring me to cajole my show-going companion into getting there nice and early like. And she is NEVER early. I ca't ever recall seeing an opening band play with her... we'd usually get caught up sucking down cocktails somewhere beforehand. That won't happen tonight since she's got a nasty cold.

I've just returned home from the crisp, cold outdoors, and a tasty lunch at Q. I love taking off weekdays from work and getting to roam around the relatively uncrowded streets of my City. As a funny aside, as the patrons at Q, all bundled up in sweaters (as I was), watched the Giants playing the Marlins in some sparkly sunshine, we were all shocked (yes, shocked) to eventually figure out it wasn't sunny Florida at all -- it was sunny and beautiful San Francisco, at the ballpark, only a few miles from our foggy, Fall afternoon! SF's microclimates never fail to amaze and amuse me.

After work yesterday, I met up w/a former co-worker at the Warfield to report for our first ever ushering shift, for the Interpol show. It wasn't so bad to run up and down the stairs seating people and weilding my flashlight auhoritatively as I bounced people back up to the cheap seats...Paul Banks joined the openers Rat Tat Tat for some sqealing guitar noise with trippy visuals, resulting in lots of screaming from the ladies. I liked their keyboard sitting there on autopilot, as they banged away at their guitars, creating a lovely grating noise. The Warlocks put on a great show too. There is something very silly and charming about a band with two drummers tearing through the set on stage at the same time.

Pleasantly, Interpol trotted out some new songs (that I liked quite a bit), despite only playing for an hour. I wonder if they did a second encore? If so, that would explain why I didn't get to hear Mr. Banks croon Obstacle 2 (perhaps my favorite song).

The people watching was fun. An acquaintance of mine who was also ushering observed he had no idea Bjrn Borg was still alive (in reference to the silly guy with the tan cord sports jacket and knitted sweatband/headband over his feathered blond hair). Lots of boys in suits and ties escorting their gussied up lady friends too. We were stationed next to a music geek boy who was attending the show with a bevy of inattentive young ladies (which is why he was chatting with us I am sure). He had just returned from seeing Radiohead 3 nights in a row (Shoreline and Hollywood Bowl were 2 of them). Somehow, he assumed I was an employee of the Warfield and was somehow able to support myself through my job there as an usher. Hehe. I did set him straight though.

My friend trekked off to BART before the encore, leaving me to soak up the music by myself. This also allowed an "in" for one of my typical freak magnet incidents. A boy who had been standing next to us sidled up behind me and whispered in his Australian or New Zealand accent in my ear, asking if they had played my favorite song yet. When I replied "no", he started trying to determine, through process of elimination which song it was. When I finally admitted to it being Obstacle 2 he inexplicably laid his head down on my shoulder like I was his girlfriend or something, gave my neck a snuggle, and ran off.

I made sure to avoid him on the way out. Here's hoping I break the freak magnet curse this evening. Cheers.
